What are diodes?
A diode is a two-terminal electronic device that allows electric current to flow in only one direction. It is made up of a P-type and an N-type semiconductor material, which are connected together. Diodes come in different shapes and sizes, but the most common type is the silicon diode. They are widely used in electronic circuits for various purposes, such as rectification, voltage regulation, and signal detection.
How do diodes work?
Diodes work based on the principle of the P-N junction, which is formed by the contact between the P-type and N-type semiconductors. When a voltage is applied across the P-N junction, the electrons from the N-type material move towards the P-type material, while the holes from the P-type material move towards the N-type material. This creates a depletion region in the junction, where no free electrons or holes are present.
However, if a forward voltage is applied in the direction that allows current to flow, the depletion region becomes thinner, and the electrons are able to cross the junction and flow through the diode. On the other hand, if a reverse voltage is applied, the depletion region becomes wider, and current flow is blocked. This property of diodes makes them useful for regulating voltage and preventing current from flowing in the wrong direction.
Examples of diode applications
Diodes are used in various applications in electronic circuits. One of the most common applications is rectification, which involves converting alternating current (AC) into direct current (DC). Diodes are used in rectifier circuits to allow current flow in one direction only, which results in a pulsating DC output.
