What is a Thermocouple?

How Does a Thermocouple Work?

The working principle of a thermocouple is based on the Seebeck effect, which states that when two dissimilar metals are connected, a voltage is generated at the junction due to the difference in temperature between the two metals.

The magnitude of the voltage generated is proportional to the temperature difference between the junction and the free ends of the thermocouple wires. This voltage can be measured using a voltmeter and can be used to determine the temperature at the junction.

The accuracy of the temperature measurement depends on the type of metals used in the thermocouple, the quality of the junction, and the calibration of the measuring device.

Types of Thermocouples

There are several types of thermocouples, each with its own unique characteristics and temperature range. The most commonly used types are:

  • Type K – made of nickel-chromium and nickel-aluminum metals, and can measure temperatures up to 1260°C.
  • Type J – made of iron and constantan metals, and can measure temperatures up to 750°C.
  • Type T – made of copper and constantan metals, and can measure temperatures up to 350°C.
  • Type E – made of nickel-chromium and constantan metals, and can measure temperatures up to 900°C.

Other types of thermocouples include Type S, Type R, and Type B, which are primarily used for high-temperature applications.

Applications of Thermocouples

Thermocouples have a wide range of applications in various industries, including:

  • Manufacturing and processing industries, where they are used to monitor temperatures in furnaces, ovens, and other high-temperature processes.
  • Aerospace industry, where they are used to measure temperatures in jet engines and other high-performance systems.
  • Medical industry, where they are used to measure body temperature and monitor patients during surgery.
  • Scientific research, where they are used to measure temperatures in experiments and to monitor the performance of equipment.
