What is a Shaded Pole Motor?
A shaded pole motor is a type of single-phase motor that consists of a stator and a rotor. The stator has a main winding, and a secondary winding that is in the form of a copper ring that surrounds a portion of each pole. This copper ring is called a shading coil. The rotor is made of a cylindrical iron core and aluminum or copper bars that are placed lengthwise along the core.
The motor gets its name from the shading coil, which creates an alternating magnetic field in the stator. This field causes the rotor to rotate. The direction of rotation is determined by the position of the shading coil relative to the main winding. Since the shading coil is fixed in place, the direction of rotation is always the same. Shaded pole motors are commonly used in small appliances, such as fans, heaters, and refrigerators.
Working Principle of a Shaded Pole Motor
When an AC voltage is applied to the main winding of a shaded pole motor, a magnetic field is created that rotates around each stator pole. When the shading coil is energized, it creates an opposing magnetic field that is out of phase with the main field. This causes a phase shift in the magnetic field, which creates a rotating field that causes the rotor to spin.
The shading coil is located on the side of the stator opposite to the unshaded portion of the pole. As the rotor turns, it passes through the shaded and unshaded portions of each pole, which creates a pulsing magnetic field. This pulsing field causes the rotor to rotate continuously. The speed of the motor is determined by the frequency of the AC voltage applied to the main winding.
Applications of Shaded Pole Motors
Shaded pole motors are commonly used in small appliances, such as fans, heaters, and refrigerators. They are also used in air conditioning systems, vending machines, and small pumps. These motors are ideal for applications that require low torque and low horsepower, and where noise and vibration are not a concern.
Advantages and Disadvantages of Shaded Pole Motors
The main advantage of shaded pole motors is their simplicity and low cost. They only require a few components, and they are easy to manufacture. They also have a long service life and require little maintenance. However, shaded pole motors have low efficiency, low power factor, and limited speed control. They are also noisy and produce a lot of vibration. Additionally, they are not suitable for high-torque applications, and their speed cannot be easily adjusted.
