Introduction to RVDTs
Rotary Variable Differential Transformer or RVDT is a type of electromechanical sensor that is used to detect rotational displacement. This device is used in a variety of applications where precise measurement of angular displacement is crucial. RVDTs are widely used in the aerospace industry, robotics, and industrial automation.
Working Principle of an RVDT
RVDTs consist of a cylindrical primary winding, and two secondary windings wound on a cylindrical former. The primary winding is connected to a source of alternating current, and the two secondary windings are connected in opposite directions. The rotor is connected to the shaft that is to be measured. As the shaft rotates, the rotor also rotates, causing a change in the magnetic coupling between the primary and secondary windings. This change in magnetic coupling causes a differential voltage between the two secondary windings, which is proportional to the angular displacement of the shaft.
Applications of RVDTs
RVDTs are used in a variety of applications where precise measurement of angular displacement is required. These sensors are used in the aerospace industry for measuring the position of aircraft control surfaces. RVDTs are also used in robotics for controlling the movement of robotic arms, and in industrial automation for measuring the position of machine tool components.
Example: RVDT used in Aircraft Control Systems
RVDTs are used extensively in aircraft control systems. These sensors are used to measure the position of aircraft control surfaces such as flaps, ailerons, and rudders. RVDTs are preferred over other sensors such as potentiometers and encoders because of their high accuracy, reliability, and durability. In aircraft control systems, RVDTs are used in conjunction with other sensors such as accelerometers and gyroscopes to provide a complete picture of the aircraft’s position and movement.
