Understanding Magnetic Drives
A magnetic drive, also known as a mag-drive or a magnetic coupling, is a mechanism that allows the transfer of torque or force between two components without any physical contact. This is achieved through the use of powerful magnets, which create a strong magnetic field that drives the motion of the connected parts. Magnetic drives are widely used in various industries, including chemical processing, pharmaceuticals, and water treatment, due to their numerous advantages such as leak-free operation, reduced maintenance, and increased safety.
Components of a Magnetic Drive
- Drive magnet: The drive magnet, also known as the outer magnet, is connected to the motor shaft and rotates with it. The rotation of the drive magnet creates a magnetic field which interacts with the field generated by the driven magnet.
- Driven magnet: The driven magnet, or inner magnet, is attached to the pump impeller or other driven components. It is separated from the drive magnet by a containment barrier, which ensures that the two magnets do not come into physical contact.
- Containment barrier: This component, typically made from non-magnetic materials like stainless steel, Hastelloy, or engineered plastics, acts as a barrier between the drive and driven magnets. It prevents any leakage and protects the magnets from the process fluid, maintaining a hermetically sealed environment.
How Magnetic Drives Work
Magnetic drives operate based on the principle of magnetic attraction and repulsion. When the motor is turned on, the drive magnet starts rotating, creating a magnetic field. This field interacts with the magnetic field generated by the driven magnet, causing it to rotate as well. The motion is transmitted through the containment barrier without any physical contact, ensuring a completely sealed environment that eliminates the risk of leaks.
Advantages of Magnetic Drives
- Leak-free operation: Since there is no physical contact between the drive and driven components, magnetic drives eliminate the need for mechanical seals, which are often prone to leaks and can cause contamination.
