Introduction to GFCI

A Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI) is an electrical safety device designed to protect people from electrical shock. It is installed in electrical outlets where there is a risk of electric shock, such as in bathrooms, kitchens, and outdoor areas. A GFCI can detect a ground fault, where electricity is flowing through an unintended path, such as through a person’s body, and shut off power to the outlet before serious injury or death can occur.

How GFCI Works

A GFCI works by constantly monitoring the electrical current flowing through a circuit. If the GFCI detects an imbalance in the current, such as when electricity is flowing through a person’s body, it will trip the circuit and shut off power to the outlet. The GFCI can detect an imbalance in the current as low as five milliamps, which is enough to cause serious injury or death.

Installing GFCIs in your home or workplace can prevent electrical shock and save lives. According to the Electrical Safety Foundation International, nearly 70% of all electrocutions in the home could be prevented by the installation of GFCIs. They are also used in areas where there is a risk of electrical shock, such as in workshops and construction sites. GFCIs are required by code in new homes and in renovations of older homes. They are also available in portable versions that can be used with extension cords and power tools.
