Current transformer

What is a Current Transformer?

A Current Transformer (CT) is an electrical device that is used for measuring electric currents. It consists of a magnetic core over which a wire is wound. Current transformers are designed to provide a reduced or isolated current that can be used to measure the current flow in a conductor without disconnecting it. They are used to measure high currents that are beyond the range of normal ammeters. CTs are commonly used in power transmission and distribution systems to measure current, monitor power quality, and protect electrical equipment from damage due to overcurrents.

Working Principle of Current Transformer

Current transformers work on the principle of electromagnetic induction. When a current flows through a conductor, it generates a magnetic field around it. When a CT is placed around the conductor, the magnetic field induces a current in the wire wound around the magnetic core of the CT. The magnitude of the induced current is proportional to the current flowing through the conductor. The CT can then be connected to an instrument or relay to measure or monitor the current.

Applications of Current Transformers

Current transformers are widely used in power systems to measure current, monitor power quality, and protect electrical equipment from overcurrents. They are used in power generation, transmission, and distribution systems, as well as in industrial and commercial applications. CTs are also used in metering systems to measure the energy consumption of large loads, such as motors and transformers. They are also used in protection systems to detect overcurrents and to trip circuit breakers to protect the electrical system from damage.

Example of Current Transformer in Action

One example of a current transformer in action is in a power substation. CTs are used to measure the current flowing through the high voltage lines and to provide a reduced current signal to the protection relays. The relays detect overcurrents and trip the circuit breakers to isolate the faulted section of the electrical system. CTs are also used to measure the load on power transformers and to provide a signal to the control system to adjust the voltage and regulate the power flow. CTs are essential components in modern power systems and are used in a wide range of applications to measure, monitor, and protect the electrical equipment.
